May Newsletter 2021

Welcome to our May newsletter where, unfortunately, we find that much of the world continues to struggle with Covid-19.

In Cambodia, Families celebrated a quieter Khmer New Year this year (April 14th), and school closed as usual for this annual holiday. However, they continue to remain closed due to government restrictions.

Many state schools are used to house covid-19 patients or those on SHN. Being a private school, Green Umbrella is exempt from this. Staff are allowed to come to the school, however, students are no longer able to pick up workbooks at school to complete at home. Therefore, we have had to fully embrace online learning, although this is not easy for all students as you will learn below.

We are lucky that we can continue to educate our students, as many uneducated youths in rural Cambodia have lost their jobs. These youth work to support extended families, including the elderly, and many cannot now afford to buy even basic food items. In response, Green Umbrella set up a Food Program to provide 200 food kits to 100 families over a few months, giving them hope to live for better days to come.

With your involvement, we can get through this challenging time together. Everything GU achieves is because of your support – from continuing to educate our students during the lockdown in Cambodia to ensure that rural families have basic food to eat.

Thank you for your continued support.
